Problem The problem mainly applies to users of earlier versions of Outlook running against Personal Folders (PST) files.
NEO receives a MAPI error after having sent an event to Outlook. The error is reported as a MAPI Logon Failure. In detail, the error stems from MAPI and Outlook being unable to accomplish the attempted operation. The results could be reported in one of the following formats:
MAPI error 8004060C-I32 Logon Failed.
MAPI error 8004060C-U08 Cannot update object.
Description and Details This problem is caused by an ANSI format PST or OST file that has reached the file size limit of 2.0 Gigabytes.
From the Microsoft Outlook 2003 Knowledge Base article 830336 "Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 has both a different format and a larger overall size limit for the personal folders (.pst) file than the .pst files that are in the earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook. In Outlook 2002 and earlier, the .pst files are in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) format, and the overall size has a limit of 2 gigabytes (GB). In Outlook 2003 .pst files are in the UNICODE format by default, and the overall size of the .pst files has a limit that is more than 20 GB. Outlook 2003 supports both the UNICODE and the ANSI formats, but the versions of Outlook that are earlier than Outlook 2003 do not support the UNICODE format and have a smaller size limit."
From the Microsoft Outlook 2000 (IMO) Knowledge Base article 197752 "Each [ANSI format] .pst file can contain 16,384 items. An item is either a folder, message, task, etc. Each folder can contain a maximum of 16,384 items. [In Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002] If you select the 'Allow upgrade to large tables' option, each folder can contain up to 65,536 items. The total file size of a [ANSI format] .pst cannot exceed 2 gigabytes (GB)."
and from the Microsoft Outlook 2002 and 2003 Knowledge Base article 288283 "When the size of your offline files (.ost) or personal folders (.pst) files approaches 2 gigabytes (GB), you may not be able to add more data to the .pst file or the .ost file. If you try to synchronize an .ost file from a mailbox that is larger than 2 GB, the .ost file stops accepting data, and you may receive the following error message: Errors in background synchronization. In most cases, more information is available in a synchronization log in the Deleted Items folder." or "Can't copy the item."
Resolution When a PST file has reached the specific size limit, the problem can be resolved only by reducing the size of the PST file. This can be handled in one of the following two methods:
Reduce the size of the PST file by permanently deleting objects or moving some of the objects (including e-mail messages) into another message store. Please understand that a deletion (DEL) of messages will not be appropriate under these circumstances, while a permanent deletion (SHFT-DEL) will be appropriate. A normal delete will not remove the object from the PST file but will rather attempt to move the message to the Deleted Items folder. Since the PST file is at the size limit, the move operation will fail.
